Managing calorie burn
Besides controlling your calorie intake, you can also control the number of calories your body burns. You do this by increasing you Resting Metabolic Rate. What is this? Your Resting Metabolic Rate is the number of calories that your body burns when you are resting, i.e. sleeping, sitting, driving, etc – i.e. not doing physical exercise. So the higher your Resting Metabolic Rate, the more calories you will burn while resting.
How do you then increase your Resting Metabolic Rate? Your Resting Metabolic Rate is determined by your “LEAN” body mass, that is your body weight excluding the weight of your fat. So it includes your muscle weight, bone weight, etc. Your total weight is then the sum of your lean weight plus your fat weight. Logic then has it that if you increase your lean body mass, your will also increase your Resting Metabolic Rate, and will burn more calories while resting.
How do you then increase your lean body mass? BY EXERCISING!! While a lot of people are exercise resistant, you can do “passive” exercise as follows:
- Use the stairs instead of the lift in a building
- Walk up an escalator instead of just standing on it
- Park at the furthest parking place at the shopping centre, gym, etc.
- Push your shopping trolley in the car park and load your boot yourself
- Better still, carry your shopping bags and don’t even use the trolley!
- Take “walk breaks” at work instead of just standing around chatting during a break
- Move your memo tray and stationary at the office so you have to get up to get to them
- Stand when talking on the phone
- If you live close to shops, walk there if you need to pop in to buy something
- Go for family walks to the park
- Walk the dog everyday
By doing exercise you will even better enhance your FAT loss (not necessarily your WEIGHT loss) as you will not only be increasing your Resting Metabolic Rate, but will also be burning additional calories while doing the exercise. Note that since muscle is heavier than fat, it is important to know that the fat loss might not show on the scale due to your increased lean weight, so having access to a weighing machine that also measures your lean and fat weight will better enable you to “see” the difference, besides feeling the difference when wearing your clothes and seeing it in the mirror. This is also why we encourage you to measure your centimetre loss as well! There is no question that exercise will always result in a faster FATloss result.
Unfortunately your body shape and where you carry your weight does make a difference:
- It’s easier to lose UPPER BODY FAT (chest, waist, stomach – an “apple” shaped body) by reducing calorie intake.
- It’s harder to lose LOWER BODY FAT (hips, bums, thighs – “pear” shape) and your results will unfortunately be slower.
Managing calorie intake
A man’s body typically needs about 2100 calories a day and a women’s about 1500 calories. With modern day eating habits we usually exceed these calorie requirements significantly, resulting in weight gain. If you simply cut 500 calories per day from your food intake, you WILL LOSE 0,5kgs per week. Cut more calories and the more you will lose per week.
To control your weight gain or weight loss it is therefore obvious that you need to control your calorie intake. Easier said than done though because very few, if any products we consume today specify the calorie amounts in those products. (This is probably because the high calorie foods would not sell!!)
HERBALIFE HELPS CONTROL CALORIE IN-TAKE?
By having two Herbalife Shakes a day, and cutting back your calorie in-take of your third meal! By having 2 Shakes a day, replacing those 2 meals you would normally have had, will immediately reduce your calorie intake, provided you don’t load your Shakes with calories. At the same time you will be getting from your Shake all the essential vitamins and minerals your body needs to function optimally, in a balanced, nutritious meal in a glass.

THE IDEAL SHAKES:
200 to 250ml waterWhile adding fruit juice to your Shake instead of some of the water is ok, it does however take more than one fruit to make that fruit juice, therefore the juice is higher in calories!
1 cut-up fruit – not peeled for added fibre (equivalent to one cup of fruit)
2 level “Herbalife” (15ml) spoons Shake powder, or 2 pregnant dessert spoons
1 or 2 level “Herbalife” (15ml) spoons Personalised Protein Powder, or 2 pregnant dessert spoons
Optional – add your Thermojetics tea and/or NRG to the mix
BLEND together with a hand held blender or in a blender till smooth
AND ENJOY!
For variety of flavour of your Shakes, simply change the fruit you use in the Shake, restricting it to only one fruit per Shake though. You can also vary the Herbalife Shake powder flavour – Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry, or Tropical Fruit.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PROTEIN?
The average male needs 150 grams of protein per day and the average female needs 100 grams per day. Your muscles need protein to develop, which means more lean body mass, which means a higher Resting Metabolic Rate, which means more calories burnt, which means more fat loss!!
